OUR HISTORY

Coin Mercantile’s  co-founder David N. Baker, began collecting coins (American and Mexican) in the early 1970’s at age 7.  It was only a few years ago though, during his Wall Street career, that he and co-founder Steve Shum, learned by accident, during a merger and acquisition assignment with a client who owns a precious metal refinery, about modern world coins (modern world coins are officially defined as beginning in 1982).  During that assignment, they interviewed tens of target companies for purchase by their client and during these interviews found that most of the numismatic coin industry in North America was solely focused upon American coins.  This led them to further explore the numismatic world coin market in North America, specifically modern world coins.  They were intrigued that modern world coins had much more diversity of design, subject matter, creativity, technological innovation, less politics by foreign government mints and issuing authorities around the world for permission to strike new coin issues and generally lower mintages than today’s numismatic American coins.  After researching the modern world coin industry for some time, they learned that there were very few companies focused on providing global customers with an extremely broad selection of modern world coins.  It was for this reason that Coin Mercantile was formed; to bring customers from around the world, the greatest selection of modern world coins.  In our quest to provide customers with greatest diversity of numismatic modern world coins, we have developed partners located around the globe to enable us to bring you the greatest diversity of numismatic modern world coins available.  Today both David and Steve are avid collectors of the rare, numismatic modern world coins sold by Coin Mercantile.
